Swimming is safe in the river. It is considered the cleanest river ecologically in the Eastern Cape. Open to the sea, the sea water pushes up about 20 km and the river is navigable 17 km.

There have been no incidents of sharks in the river.
The shallow river mouth is apparently a deterrent for sharks to enter the river, and there are no crocodiles in the river.
